Following these guidelines might make your move to your Scottsdale dream home a little easier.
Two months before Moving
- Open a file, to keep all paperwork (quotations, estimates, receipts, etc.) involved in your move to Paradise Valley or Scottsdale, Arizona.
- If you’ll be using a moving company, now’s the time to get estimates.
- If you’ll be moving yourself, get quotes from truck rental companies.
- To prepare for furniture and appliance placement in your new Scottsdale home, create a floor plan.
- Start getting rid of the clutter! Check your attic, garage, etc. and start making a list of the items you’ll need to move to your Scottsdale home… and the things you can live without.
- If you have school-aged children, arrange to have their school records transferred to your local Scottsdale schools.
Six weeks before moving to your luxury Scottsdale home
- Decide on your moving or truck rental company.
- Go to your local Post Office and pick up change-of-address cards.
- Consider taking out a subscription to one of the Phoenix or Scottsdale newspapers, to keep abreast of what’s happening in your new neighborhood… including real estate developments in the Scottsdale area.
- Arrange for storage facilities, if applicable.
- Get all your medical records from your doctor.
- Get appraisals on all artwork, antiques or other valuables.
- Think about using up foodstuffs and other consumables you don’t want to take with you to your new Scottsdale home.
Four weeks before moving to Scottsdale
- Arrange to have your current utilities disconnected the day after your move; arrange for connections the day before your move for your luxury Scottsdale home.
- Reserve your rental truck, if you’re moving yourself.
- If you’re doing your own packing, get boxes and other materials and start packing things you don’t need until you’ve reached your new Scottsdale home.
- If you need special arrangements to move pets or plants, make them now.
- Double check whether your insurance covers any damage suffered in transit.
- Make arrangements for your big garage sale.
Three weeks before you move to your new home in Scottsdale
- Get rid of anything that can’t be moved, such as dangerous items.
- If moving from another state, prepare to transfer your car’s registration.
- Book the freight elevator if you live in an apartment.
- Arrange for childcare on moving day.
- Host your garage sale.
Two weeks before moving day
- Find creative ways to get rid of things nobody bought at your garage sale.
- Make sure your car is serviced, in advance of your move.
- Return library books or other borrowed items.
- Collect anything you’ve lent out to others.
- Cancel your local newspaper.
- Advise all creditors of your move, and give them the address of your new Scottsdale home.

- Banking: transfer accounts to Scottsdale, cancel and empty safe deposit box.
- If you have power equipment you’re moving, drain them of fuel.
- Donate un-moveable plants and other items to neighbors.
- If you’ve made travel reservations, confirm them.
Two to three days before moving day
- Pack your belongings, or have your movers do it.
- If you’ll be moving any major appliances, disconnect them and get them ready.
- Put aside everything you want to take with you in your car. (Don’t let it get accidentally loaded into the moving truck.)
- Pack the items you’ll need when you first arrive in Scottsdale, and set them aside. Mark that box “load last”, so it will be first off the truck.
- Call the movers and confirm the arrival time of your truck.

Moving day!
- If you are using a moving company, make sure someone is there (at your old house) to answer any questions they may have.
- Take note of all utility meter readings.
- If the moving company has given you an inventory, go over it very carefully before signing it. And make sure you keep it in a safe place.
Delivery day: first day in your new Scottsdale home.
- Make sure you’re ready to pay the movers by the agreed method. Chances are, they won’t unload until they’re paid (on an inter-state move especially).
- Supervise all the unloading and unpacking of your goods.
- Carefully check all your belongings NOW. Take note of any damage.
- Congratulations. You now own real estate in Scottsdale, Arizona.
